“Thar she blows!” The hard men of the sea take to their boats in pursuit of the gentle giants of the ocean. Introducing our 28mm Whaleboats, complete with crews and equipment.
These whaleboat models are from the hey-day of the whaling industry between 1840 and 1860, and represent boats typical of those associated with the Yankee whalers operating out of New England and Nantucket. Whaleboats were light and swift vessels, with double-ends so they could be reversed quickly. Pulling on long oars, a five man crew could propel them at speeds of 5 knots.

Our whaleboats are 28mm resin cast models with white metal accessories, designed by ‘Uncle Les’, and all the crew figures are white metal miniatures sculpted by Alan Marsh. The boat comes with a six man crew and is available in two different versions. One boat represents the whalers in hot pursuit of their quarry. It includes five rowers pulling hard on their oars, and a one legged boat captain standing alert in the bow with harpoon at the ready (no doubt looking to re-acquaint himself with a certain white whale). The other boat shows the crew in action at the moment of attacking a whale. Three of the crew steady the vessel with tiller and oars, while the boat captain and harpooner get on with business. All the crew figures are different and full of character. Imaginative figure painters will enjoy adding lots of sea-salt flavour to these miniatures. Our painter and reknowned tattoo artist (Kosta Heristanidis) chose to depict our harpooner with a full facial Moko tattoo – an itinerant seafarer from the ‘Land of the Long White Cloud’.

Customers should note that these are not water-line models, because we didn’t want to shorten the legs of the crew. However, each boat comes complete with a stand for display and a ‘wave’ base for game purposes. The ‘wave’ base is especially designed for the attacking whaleboat, and when fitted correctly, puts the harpooner at exactly the right angle! However, the same base can easily be adapted for the rowing whaleboat, so we include it with this model as well.
