| 18mm Seven Years War Russians | An inefficient command structure and a vast baggage train ensured the Russian army’s movements during the Seven Years War were never rapid, but once the Russians decided to stand their ground and fight, their opponents were faced with a daunting opponent.
The endurance of the Russian peasant soldier was famous. Tenacious, steadfast, and even obstinate are all words that have been used to describe the serfs who filled the ranks. The typical Russian soldier was poorly educated, deeply religious, and fiercely patriotic – underpinned by a deep xenophobia for all things beyond the borders of the motherland. Army discipline was extremely harsh – yet desertions were surprisingly rare, even though in many cases they joined the army for life, and few ever saw their homes or families again. They remained stubborn and obedient often to the bitter end.
However, it would be a mistake to characterise the Russian army as being some unsophisticated juggernaut from the fringes of ‘civilised’ Europe. Despite the distractions of developing specific tactics to fight the Turks the Russians were well acquainted with the drills and tactics of the other 18th Century European armies and were applying them accordingly. The Russian cavalry was well mounted and was to prove a match for their Prussian opponents, and the Russian artillery was arguably the best trained and equipped in Europe.
Our new range is based on the Russian order of battle at Zorndorf in 1758 and should allow the collector to recreate any Russian force from that campaign. All the figures are made in our 18mm scale and for collectors who want absolute accuracy we have provided all the principal troop types in both the ‘winter’ and ‘summer’ uniforms. The summer uniform was normally worn on campaign, but we realise that some of you will still prefer the winter uniform with its attractive red and green colour scheme. Another feature of this army which is a little different from the Prussians and Austrians in the range is the inclusion of firing and loading infantry figures which are there to reflect the Russian’s fondness for engaging in prolonged fire fights. The distinctive Corps of Observation also feature, and as the Russian armies were infamous for their lumbering baggage trains we have included a selection of both horse and ox drawn wagons for you to choke up your table top roadways with. Our special offer (see below) will help you get the traffic jam started!
All figures are supplied unpainted.
