| 28mm “The Modern Prometheus” | In various versions of the Greek and Roman myth it was Prometheus who created man, and also gave man the secret of fire with all its benefits and all its destructive dangers. To Mary Shelly Prometheus was no hero but a dangerous figure who flaunted the natural order in his self obsessed quest to create life and who then failed to take responsibility for the consequences of his actions. This then was the inspiration for Victor Frankenstein, a genius who creates life from death, in the image of a man – but then rejects the poor creature as a monster. When she created the character of Frankenstein around 1817 Shelly had various contemporary themes in mind, not the least being the ominous rise of the new industrial technology and what unknown dangers the engineers and scientists might unwittingly unleash upon humanity in their pursuit of the Industrial Revolution. The warning perhaps still has some resonance today for our gene engineers and manipulators!
Hollywood, on the other hand, just liked the idea of a monster created by a mad scientist from other peoples’ dead bits! These various celluloid versions are what Kosta had in mind when he designed our mini-diorama, and here you have all classic horror elements. The secret castle laboratory with its high gothic windows; the Lightening Capacitors ready to capture the power of the storm; the bookshelf of forbidden knowledge (including a copy of the Necronomicon); the down trodden hunch-back assistant; the ‘Monster’ (we would like to stress that no living miniatures were harmed in the creation of this figure), and last but not least, the good doctor himself – exultant at the moment of his creation’s ‘birth’. All that’s missing is the lightening and the torch carrying, pitch fork wielding angry mob from the local village laying siege to the castle! (And if you want some suitable vigilantes we would recommend taking a look at our 28mm Tyrolean range). All items in the set can be ordered separately if desired.
So you too can be a Modern Prometheus. The storm is at its height and the hunch-backed assistant is ready to throw the switch – all that remains is for you to take up your paint brushes and bring your creation to life!
Here are the catalogue details for the new miniatures.
