| 28mm American Revolution Continental Dragoons | The American Revolutionary War was first and foremost an infantryman's war. Beyond the 'islands' of cleared cultivation and open meadows clustered around the edges of the far flung towns and small rural communities of the American Colonies, the rest of the landscape remained dominated by great expanses of dense woodland. For mounted troops this was difficult (often impenetrable) terrain, and certainly quite unsuitable for the employment of the type of massed heavy cavalry formations so familiar in European theatres. Both sides therefore used only Light Cavalry, in squadron sized detachments, for reconnaissance, screening and pursuit. Unit strengths were generally low due to a shortage of suitable mounts and a scarcity of recruits with the required experience. With the exception of the celebrated clash at the Battle of Cowpens, cavalry played only a peripheral role as far as the famous set piece battles of the war were concerned, but lovers of the mounted arm should not despair as the character of the American Revolutionary War offers numerous possibilities for raiding and skirmishing wargames where cavalry can feature prominently.
For the American Continental army a number of cavalry units were raised - invariably described as "Light Dragoons", "Mounted Militia" or "Light Horse". Our new figures can be used to represent most of these formations, either in a smart uniformed appearance - or in a ragged, ununiformed look suitable for irregular militia cavalry or regular units emerging from the depravations of winter quarters such as Valley Forge. However, they are more specifically intended for the four Regiments of the American Corps of Light Dragoons formed in 1777 under the colourful Brigadier-General Count Casimir Pulaski. The details for the uniforms of these regiments are difficult to pin down and the sources often contradict each other. This is perhaps due to the frequent practice of combining depleted squadrons with under strength squadrons from other Light Dragoon regiments which must have offered a confused appearance of uniforms to contemporary observers. The subject of headgear is a particularly thorny problem, so we have provided a choice of interchangeable helmets in all the known styles, as well as a variety of irregular soft hats. The combination of hats with the buckskin jackets of the ragged versions of the figures will allow customers to make various militia units.
The result of yet another successful 100 Club project (as have been all our other AWI / American Revolution releases) these figures have been designed to be compatible with the excellent Perry Miniatures range. For those of you looking for ideas and further AWI inspiration we would recommend you take a look at Giles Allison's very fine Blog "Tarleton's Quarter" and his recreation of Armand's Legion using our figures. There is even some further information on Pulaski at http://gilesallison.blogspot.com/2011/06/count-casimir-pulaski.html
