| 28mm Gunboat guns and crews | The gunboat guns are the latest addition to our expanding range of Colonial period 28mm miniatures for 19th and early 20th Century gamers. All manner of obscure ordnance was pressed into river boat and coastal service during this period, but sculptor Mike Broadbent thought it only right and proper that we should choose guns with an Australian flavour.
The single barrelled weapon is a 3pdr breech-loading Hotchkiss Quick Firing Gun, which had a range of 3,400 yards and fixed ammunition (the shell and cartridge was supplied in one piece, with the propellant charge contained in the same way as a rifle bullet, in a brass cartridge case). Four of these French designed guns were mounted on HMCS Protector, Australia’s first naval vessel, which sailed to China in 1900 to help suppress the Boxer Rebellion. The five barrel .45cal Nordenfelt Machine Gun was widely used on the vessels purchased by the fledgling Australian Navy in the late 19th early 20th century. Both weapons were commonly used across the World’s colonial hot spots. (Some of the above taken from “Bluejackets and Boxers" by Bob Nicholls). Of course, you don’t have to limit the use of these models to just gunboats. Both weapons will look equally at home on dry land, guarding the approaches to some long forgotten riverside trading post or coastal port. Mike has also made a selection of gun crew in a generic 19th Century naval uniform which will easily paint up into a variety of nationalities as required.
Here are the catalogue details for the new miniatures –
